The development of tourism industry in Beidaihe New District brings ours tourist city with new ideas and experiences.

“Mom, take me to the hot springs at the beach.” The winter is coming, and the weather is getting colder and colder. The 4-year-old daughter of Ms. Meng asked her mother to go to the hot springs. Ms. Meng and her colleagues went to the hot springs of the Arcadia Hotel in Beidaihe New District last winter, and the little girl was so impressed by the nice place that she wanted to play with the children again.
The traditional tourist peak season has passed since the summer is gone, but the high-end hotels and home stays in Beidaihe New District are still popular. “It’s marvelous! we don’t feel cold even at night, because the atmosphere is too hot!” Not long ago, Mr. Jing and his friends attended the music festival held in Aranya, in which the bands such as Xinkuzi(New Pants) Band that has been popular since its performance on the variety show The Summer of the Band attracted many music fans from our city and neighboring cities such as Beijing and Tianjin, and everyone had a great time there.
In the traditional tourism off-season, several high-end hotels, home stays and upgraded old scenic spots in Beidaihe New District have actively developed full-time tourism projects, such as hot springs, skiing, sports events, cultural performances, etc., to attract high consumption groups from surrounding cities and local areas. Taking the Fisher Island Ocean Hot Spring as an example, it received 68,300 tourists with an income of 22,738,900 yuan through projects such as conference and hot springs in the autumn and winter of 2018.
Targeting high-end customers with characteristic travel products
In fact, in addition to the autumn and winter, you can experience entertainment completely different from the previous sightseeing tour all the year round in Beidaihe New District, which is due to the unique tourism positioning of the new district.
Policymakers have thought about a problem when they are making the top level design of the new district tourism:
Qinhuangdao is a well-known tourist city, so are Beidaihe and Shanhaiguan. Will Beidaihe New District, which also owns blue sea and golden sand as these mature tourist destinations, go on depending on the old same way like bathing beach, seafood, or selling tickets? Zhao Shiguo, member of the Beidaihe New District Working Committee and researcher of the Management Committee, said that the development orientation of the tourism in the new district is very clear, that is, to create the “first-class international health care tourism destination”.
Create a tourism community, high-end hotel groups and characteristic home stays, and build new projects on the occasion of the second Conference on Tourism Development of Hebei to promote the transformation and upgrading of the old scenic spots, and attract young tourists who are in favor of the leisure tourism. “The core resource of the tourism industry is to target the source group,” Zhao Shiguo said, adding that for the new district, we need to target precisely the tourists, especially the high-end health care tourists from Beijing, while doing good in mass tourism.
Focus on them, study their consumption habits, highlight our own characteristics, make different design and positioning, and launch different tourism products. Nowadays, Beidaihe new district has formed a cluster of tourism products such as the leisure and health care tourism represented by Aranya, Arcadia and Heart Paradise, the coastal resort tourism represented by the Fisher Island, Xianluodao Island, Sand Sculpture Ocean Park and the Blue Ocean Park, the culture and sports experience tourism represented by the Blue Coast. Various tourism products attract tourists to stay, and tourism in the new district has become a way of life. According to the statistics of relevant departments, in recent years, tourists from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and other places accounted for 70%, tourists who were born in 1980s and 1990s with strong consumption accounted for 60%, self-driving and parent-child tourists accounted for 58% of the total tourists in the new district, and the proportion of high-end, self-driving and parent-child tourist has increased year by year.
High-end tourism brings greater economic benefits
The high-end tourists group has driven the sustained and rapid growth of the tourism economy in the new district in recent years. According to Sun Yingwei, deputy director of the Bureau of Tourism, Culture and Sports of Beidaihe New District, in 2018, the total tourism revenue of Beidaihe New District was 7.945 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 33.55%. During the tourist peak season in 2019, the occupancy rate of Arcadia Hotel was 83.99% with the per capita consumption of 1,500 yuan; the occupancy rate of the Aranya Mediterranean Hotel reached over 95%, the average house price was 1,800 yuan, the highest was 5,376 yuan, and the per capita consumption was nearly 3,000 yuan. Aranya Anlan Hotel received 47,800 tourists with a total income of 35 million yuan; the occupancy rate of Jiankanggu Hotel and Fisher Island Hot Spring Hotel exceeded 70%. During the peak season, the total tourism revenue of the new district was 532,114,400 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 11.58%.
Another data is worth thinking about: As of the end of September this year, the new district received 9,945,500 tourists with the total social tourism revenue of 8.556 billion yuan, up 3.27% and 11.25% year-on-year respectively. Although the number of tourists has only increased by more than 3%, the income growth has been more than 11%, which means that high-end tourism brings greater economic benefits to the new district.
At the same time, high-end tourism has broken the low-end development mode of relying on tickets to maintain the company’s income. Take Fisher Island as an example, its ticket sales account for less than one-third of the total income of the scenic spot, but the average number of days of staying in the new district has reached 1.5 days to 3 days, which accelerated the growth of tourism consumption.
Zhao Shiguo said that the biggest characteristic of tourism is its motivation. The new district will continue to study the needs of high-end consumer source groups through high-end tourism, and work hard on characteristics and quality, so as to create new tourism products such as pastoral rural scenery + green agriculture, and drive the development of other industries in the new districts, especially the rural industrial chain.
