It is cold in Beidaihe, Qinhuangdao in winter, and the migration season is over. Despite of the freezing wind, many seabirds forage in the waves or fly above the sea at Beidaihe Dachaoping wetland near the Pigeon Nest Park, which looks beautiful in the lens of the bird lovers.

“This is the estuary of the Xinhe River. In these years, Beidaihe has protected the upper and lower reaches of the river very well. There are abundant creatures of the river and the sea in this wetland.” said Liu Xuezhong, a patrolman of the Free Wings Daihe Wetland, who loves to watch birds and take photos with his professional camera in his spare time.
Beidaihe and the coastal wetlands are the migration routes for migratory birds from Northeast Asia to Australia. Each year, there are millions of migratory birds passing through here, and a large number of summer migratory birds and resident birds breed here.
The conservation of the rivers, sea, forests, fields, and wetlands is the reason why birds stay in Beidaihe. In recent years, Qinhuangdao is committed to cultivating and protecting the good ecological environment of biodiversity, with a forest coverage rate of 54% and a green coverage rate of 40.24% in the central city. There are more than 90,000 mu of sheltered forests in the coastal wetland of Beidaihe, with lush vegetation and shrubs. “Birds are the most qualified environmental appraisers. Where there is birds’ singing, where there is ecological land.” said Liu Xuezhong.

“The newly discovered bird species has been on the rise in Beidaihe. There were only more than 300 species of birds found in Beidaihe and the surrounding area in the past. Now there are more than 500 species.” Qinhuangdao Wildlife Rescue Center of China Wildlife Conservation Association is near the Pigeon Nest Wetland on the opposite side of the road. Xiao Jinggui, an engineer, said, “The good environment is good for birds’ living, which can provide them with food and physiological needs."
Xiao Jinggui carries out bird rescue work in the forest farm every day. He said that because of the cute birds, people’s awareness of ecological protection is generally enhanced. In order to prevent the intruders from disturbing the bird’s “home”, a protective fence has been set around the pigeon nest wetland, and guardians patrol every day. New law was issued this year to forbid the aerial cameras in this area, to ensure a safer space for the birds.
According to reports, with the government’s efforts to strengthen the governance and protection of the coastal waters, Beidaihe has basically realized the integration of urban and rural sewage. The water quality of the seawater is maintained at the same level as the national standard. The surface water of the main rivers such as Daihe River is stable in the third class standard.
