On the cultural square of Luzhuang Village, Beidaihe District, Qinhuangdao City, fishing nets, starfish, conch and other decorations full of sea flavor can be seen everywhere. A big and a small fishing boats stand upright, and the bells jingle in the wind. “These two fishing boats are my old friends, they have made great contributions to my family, and now they have retired for many years,” Liu Xiufu said happily in front of the fishing boats.
Liu Xiufu, who is 74 years old, runs a three-story family hotel. He used to make living by fishing like other villagers. “It was difficult and little paid, and what’s more, we were afraid that the uncontrolled fishing would destroy the sea resources. A few years ago, the Beidaihe District Government encouraged fishermen to go ashore, and I sold my fishing boat.”
Liu Xiufu became the first in the village to abandon fishing, and go for tourism. “Run a hotel for accommodation and catering to improve the tourism, my business is prosperous all the year round, and the income is far more than that of fishing.” Liu Xiufu said.

The other villagers followed Liu’s example when seeing his success. According to statistics, the number of operating fishing boats in the village decreased from 55 to 2 after the government redeemed the fishing boats, the number of the villagers who run family hotels increased to 60% of the total population of the village, and more than 200 fishermen went for tourism. “Now, the per capita annual income has increased from a few thousand yuan to more than 20,000 yuan, and the villagers’ happiness index has also doubled.” Liu Xiufu said.
“The old friends of mine took me to go fishing on the sea, with occasional good harvest, and now they go ashore to welcome guests for me, the difference is that we have good harvest every year!” Liu Xiufu said.

To develop the home stay is one of the main ways for fishermen in Beidaihe to change production in recent years. Beidaihe District takes opportunity to promote the construction of a civilized ecological village, and the village is unified in planning and coordination to transform the old residential area. At the same time, a number of characteristic boutique tourism routes are formed in each fishing village. Every summer evening, tourists can enjoy leisure time here, which promotes the development of tourism economy. Up to now, more than 76% of the fishing vessels in Beidaihe District have been redeemed by the government.
