Beidaihe Wetland is the largest urban wetland in China. In recent years, Beidaihe District, as the core city of this wetland, has paid great attention to protecting the ecosystems of marine, forest, and wetland, in order to achieve excellent regional ecology and protect biodiversity.
At 10 o’clock in the morning, workers were working on the Bird Garden, a newly-built biological control wetland on the west side of Beidaihe Village Committee. The “Bird Island” nearby was covered with purple flowers and green plants. What a lovely ecological picture, with the voices and colors, tranquility and activity of the birds, cicadas, and swimming fishes.

“The ecological treatment project in the lower reaches of the Daihe River was officially implemented on March 17 this year, aiming to restore the ecological environment, and ensure that the waters into the sea meet the standard. Now that we have cleared the silt in the river, planted reeds and cattails on both sides of the bank, and water lilies and other aquatic plants on the slop and shallow waters in the inner river, the water quality, environment and landscape are getting better, which attracted many villagers and tourists, and received their praise.” said Liu Huanqiu, a staff member of the Water Affairs Bureau of Beidaihe District, “The Bird Island expands the living space of birds, protects and restores the habitat of migratory birds. The newly-built artificial wetland is more capable of conserving and purifying water, maintaining biodiversity, and promoting wetland biological science education.”

Beidaihe District is rich in wetland resources, covering shallow waters, rocky coasts, intertidal sandy beaches, estuary waters, permanent rivers, lakes, herbaceous swamps and artificial wetlands. In recent years, Beidaihe District has attached great importance to the protection of wetland resources, and invested hundreds of millions of yuan to remedied forest parks, restore wetlands, improve coastal environment, renovate ecological sightseeing parks, and construct bird museums, and the Beidaihe Wetland restoration and other projects are included in the key greening construction projects in the whole district.
1.32 million fish fries in the hatching pond of Beidaihe Central Experimental Station of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences has reached the release specification. Yu Qinghai, director of Station said that they incubate and release commercial fish in Qinhuangdao waters every year, a total of 30 million fish fries, 300 million Chinese prawns, and 450 million shellfish fries have been released into the Bohai Bay area. “From recent surveys of marine organisms in the Bohai Sea, releasing activities have greatly improved the fishery resources in offshore and inland waters, and fishing floods that have almost disappeared have reappeared.” said Yu Qinghai.

In order to do a good job in forest ecological protection, Beidaihe District has invested a total of more than 2 million yuan, to protect and rejuvenate more than 5,600 ancient and famous trees in Lianfeng Mountain, Jieshi Garden, and Pingshui Bridge through erecting monuments, conserving water and soil, and filling tree cavities. “We have filed the ancient and famous trees, recording their age, protection level, family, genus, and species on the signboards that present information and protection knowledge to the people.” said Dang Aili, director of the Social Greening Office of the Landscape and Gardening Bureau of Beidaihe District, adding that through this measure, the protection level, age, latitude and longitude, altitude and other data of ancient and famous trees were determined. Photos were taken, and archives were established and perfected. Experts and professors were invited to diagnose and treat the weak trees, and do a good job in daily maintenance and rejuvenation. In addition, Beidaihe District has also planted trees, shrubs, ground cover plants, and aquatic plants, which effectively improved the stability and diversity of the plant community.
There are 2 bird watching platforms in the west of Dachaoping in the Pigeon Nest Park. Bird watching enthusiasts come here during the bird watching season. A 1,000-meter white GRP fence protects visitors from entering the wetland, so that human activities are always controlled outside the bird ecological reserve.
There is a modern thematic science museum integrating bird science and experience beside the Pigeon Nest Park. It has become an important educational camp for promoting bird science, and advocating harmonious coexistence among man, bird, and nature. In order to better protect bird resources, China Wildlife Conservation Association has set up Qinhuangdao Wildlife Rescue Center in Beidaihe, to provide timely rescue to the injured birds, and create a good ecological environment for birds.

The Beidaihe ecological account shows that the marine ecological protection has been continuously upgraded. The rivers entering to the sea have been improved, and the protection of famous and ancient trees has been strengthened... A series of “green ecological” actions have drawn up the diverse biological map of Beidaihe, and the natural reserve with rich forest resources, vast wetlands, and wide variety of bird species has been formed.
According to statistics, there are plants of 367 species (including 21 varieties and 2 subspecies) of 257 genera and 93 families in Beidaihe, more and more species of birds have been recorded, a total of more than 500 species have been recorded compared with 402 species decades ago, and 450 species a few years ago. Thousands of birds have flocked in Beidaihe Wetland nowadays.
