Senior pilots Gao Hong and Wu Yangyi from the Pilot Station of Qinhuangdao Port, wearing protective suits, masks, goggles, rubber gloves, and carrying heavy pilot equipment bags, climbed the Hong Kong-China general cargo ship “Shaoshan 8” along the pilot ladder, which is 225 meters long, with a full load of 60,000 tons of Brazilian soybeans, and guided it docked at the No. 12 grocery berth within more than two hours.

They muffled themselves up in despite of the hot autumn weather. Although the outdoor temperature reached 31 ℃ at two o’clock in the afternoon, and the temperature on the deck was even more than 40 ℃, the pilots decided to operate outside the pilothouse in case they take risks to be infected with COVID-19 due to contact with the crew.
The pilots sweated in high temperature. Their protective clothing drenched with sweat, and their goggles covered with a layer of mist when they drove to the port to complete their mission, but they have to keep on their guard, so that they can finish their work well, while preventing themselves from being infected and not taking the virus ashore.
After they finish their work and take off the protective clothing, the handsome white uniform and rubber gloves are soaked in sweat, and firmly stuck to the body, their hands are white and wrinkled with sweat.
Ship piloting is an important part in ensuring the safety of ships and ports, maintaining the marine environment, and ensuring the production and operation of port and shipping enterprises. In order to avoid accidents such as stranding, rocking, collision, etc., the pilots have to make scientific and perfect plan for each piloting task, to ensure the safe entry and exit of ships with their superb piloting technology. Pilots, as the first close contacts of overseas ships arriving at the port, stick to the production line of port and shipping despite of dangers. They are responsible for the smooth marine transportation, coming and going between the port and the ships, and protect the first line for the prevention and control of the epidemic from overseas.
The shipping industry is the “barometer” of the global economy, and more than 80% of global trade relies on shipping. Enterprises in various ports, including the century-old Qinhuangdao Port, owe to the hard working of these 24 pilots at the Pilot Station of Qinhuangdao Port day and night, they own orderly production everyday.
