On the evening of October 18, the Benthos renovation project of Shihenan Island in Qinhuangdao was launched by Qinhuangdao Association of Bird Watching (Lovers), 11,500 kg of calm seedlings were released to Shihenan Island’s 30-mu tidal flats, to restore the benthic organisms, and provide abundant food supplies for the migratory birds.
The seedlings were released on October 19.
Shihenan Island is the only natural island in Qinhuangdao City. It is located in Shanhaiguan District, Qinhuangdao City, south of the Shihe River Estuary. The island has a land area of more than 80 hectares and a total coastline of 3.54 kilometers.
Shihenan Island is a natural island located within the Yellow and Bohai Sea wetlands. It is rich in animal and plant resources. The island wetland is an important habitat for migratory birds, and an important hub of migration. There are a large number of migratory birds flocking on the island during the migration season.
According to records from Qinhuangdao Association of Bird Watching (Lovers), there are 504 species of birds in Qinhuangdao, among which more than 300 species have been observed on Shihenan Island, including long-tailed ducks, yellow-billed egrets, little whinbrels, and cormorants. There are even many national first-class species such as black-billed gulls, black stork, and black-faced spoonbills. The observation record of more than 300 species of birds in an area less than one square kilometer is extremely rare in the world.
According to the staff of Qinhuangdao Association of Bird Watching (Lovers), the increasing frequency of human activities and the invasion of alien species have imperiled the lives of migratory birds that rely on beaches for food supply. In the eastern coastal areas of China, it is common for birds to find insufficient food. This is fatal to birds because they can accumulate relatively little fat. If they cannot find a suitable place to feed them, they cannot complete migration and will die halfway.
11,500 kg of clam seedlings are released for experiment.
Clams are the main food for egrets, plovers, and sandpipers. Experienced clam raisers will strictly oversee the releasing areas, and take good care of them to alleviate the food shortage of birds.
