“It is a good harvest of gingers this year! The best I have ever seen in my 18-year planting career, with an average yield of 7,500 kg per mu. I can earn about 700,000 yuan from my 20-mu ginger field, and I will plant 20 mu more next year.” Zhang Aiyun rejoiced on October 14, who lives in Sizhaozhuang Village, Liushouying Townsip, Funing District, Qinhuangdao, harvesting gingers with more than 80 workers in his ginger field in which produces flashy gingers, more than 100 boxes of gingers are about to be loaded and transported.

Funing District has nearly 40 years of ginger planting history, and is known as the “Hometown of Ginger in China”. In recent years, the ginger planting area in Funing District has stabilized at more than 10,000 mu. The ginger industry, mainly in the Xiazhuang management area and Liushouying township, has initially formed an industrial pattern in which ginger farmers, ginger production and marketing cooperatives, and ginger processing enterprises rely on and cooperate with each other under the support of government departments at all levels, which not only absorbed part of the surplus labor force, but also promoted the economic development of downstream industries. Ginger health-care products such as ginger slices, ginger shreds, ginger candy and other deep-processed products have been widely recognized in the market.
Sizhaozhuang Village is a well-known ginger planting village. The gingers cannot grow well in the field unless crops are changed within two or three years. “Our villagers have leased more than 2,000 mu of land to grow ginger in surrounding villages, with hundreds of mu in our village, we can harvest 1,950 kg this year,” the village Party branch secretary Sun Jianli said, “60,000 kg of gingers were transported to Shandong yesterday, and 8 trucks of gingers were delivered by cooperatives today.”
“In 2013, we established the Sizhaozhuang crop planting professional cooperative, with 10 shareholders and more than 200 members, providing ginger farmers services such as land and ginger seeds selecting, experts inviting, technical guiding, aircraft spraying, workers employing, and merchants introducing.” Sun Jianli, who has rich experience in ginger planting, said, “Relying on the reputation of the “Hometown of ginger in China”, the Funing’s ginger is less influenced by the market, and increase the income of ginger farmers.
“I have been purchasing gingers in Funing for dozens of years. The gingers here are good in quality due to the long growth cycle and low drug residues. They are exported to foreign mid-to-high-end markets," said Wang Zuojun from Taizhong Vegetables and Food Co, Ltd of Rizhao, Shandong, “The 6-truck gingers we bought the day before yesterday is being further processed in the factory, and will be exported to the Netherlands.”
The ginger harvest will take over 10 days, during which workers are very busy in the ginger field. Sun Jianli organizes more than a thousand people to work in various ginger fields.
“I am responsible for ginger packing. The ginger must be placed carefully in case of damage during transportation. The largest piece of ginger can reach more than 5 kilograms, and I can handle more than 200 boxes a day.” said Wu Dianjun from Qinglong Manchu Autonomous County, who has been engaging in this work for 10 years and has found his own methods for packing.
“I can earn 150 yuan a day, that’s not bad.” said Yang Guirong also from Qinglong, whose work is cutting ginger seedlings, “I get up early at 5 o’clock every morning, come to Funing by bus, work 9 hours a day, have my lunch and take a break at noon, and get paid in the evening, nothing to complain.”
After the ginger harvest this year, Sun Jianli will select ginger seeds for next year, which is important to the quality and yield of gingers. “I buy the ginger seedlings from Weifang, Shandong. It’s not an easy job to do. I have to be very careful to observe each of them. None dead seedling should be neglected, or it will cause ginger disease.” At present, the problem of Sizhaozhuang Village is ginger storage. Sun Jianli said, “We can sell at a better price if we have a constant temperature warehouse, and we will continue to expand the planting area, so that more villagers can get rich.”
