During the Hoar-forest Descent(18th solar term ), workers started to harvest gingers in the field of Xiaojiang Professional Cooperative in Xizhuang Village, Liushouying Township, Funing District, Qinhuangdao City.
Gao Cheng, a 70-year-old villager in Xizhuang Village, and other workers put boxes of gingers in the trucks.
“Sweetheart, time for lunch!” Mrs. Gao shouted. “Don’t bother, I’ll eat here in the field, my boss’s treat! I’ll get work to do!” replied Gao Cheng.
In recent years, the Xiaojiang Professional Cooperative has rented many pieces of land from the surrounding areas to engage in agricultural planting, offering jobs for his fellow villagers. “I am a strong loader, but I found it’s hard to get a job and earn money, until I get this job, and I can earn money in my village.” Gao Cheng said happily.
“It’s a good harvest of gingers this year, which also brings me more money. We can load 45 tons of gingers every day, 25 yuan per ton, I can earn about 300 yuan a day.” said Gao, whose 9 mu of farmland for leasing to the cooperative at the market price of 500 kilograms of corn per mu per year. “Last year, the rent per mu was nearly 1,000 yuan, I got my rent of nearly 10,000 yuan in total. I am an old man, but I can earn more than 50,000 yuan a year."
With the good development of the ginger industry, villagers like Gao in Liushouying Township choose to work in village. Take the Xiaojiang Professional Cooperative as an example. They employ at least 800 people per year, paying 100 to 300 yuan each day. Villagers can pick seedlings, plant, and ventilate in spring, remove mulching film, earth up, water, and fertilize in summer, and harvest and transport in autumn. They can get paid in three seasons.
Xiaojiang Professional Cooperative is a private cooperative, while many other collective cooperatives are established by villages in Liushouying Township, to develop large growers and drive the development of the ginger industry.
“It is a good harvest of gingers this year! The purchase price is about 1.5 yuan per kilogram, and I can earn over 40,000 yuan from one mu of land.” said Zhang Aiyun, who has been engaged in ginger planting for more than 15 years, and his farm has been enlarged by 10 times now. The gingers increased his income.
“There are only 400 households in Sizhaozhuang Village, and there are 3000 mu of ginger field in village with an average yield of 65,00 kg per mu, and the sales volume of about 120 million yuan. Each farmer can get more than 50 million yuan.” the Party branch secretary Sun Jianli said.
In 2013, Sun Jianli established the Sizhaozhuang crop planting professional cooperative, which makes Sizhaozhuang Village a professional ginger village, providing ginger farmers services such as land and ginger seeds selecting, inviting experts, technical guiding, aircraft spraying, workers employing, and merchants introducing. “Twelve or three trucks of gingers are transported to Shandong every day, with more than 30,000 kg each, and we have to employ about 1,000 workers per day.” Sun Jianli said.
There are more than 6,000 mu of ginger planting area in Liushouying Township, which is expected to bring a net income of 100 million yuan to the farmers this year. “The superior soil environment and pleasant climate in Liushouying Township provide unique conditions for the growth of gingers that are featured large size, less fiber, and strong ginger flavor.” said Huang Qiang, Minister of Publicity of the Party Committee of Liushouying Township.
Funing District has nearly 40 years of ginger planting history, and is known as the “Hometown of Ginger in China”. In recent years, the ginger planting area in Funing District has stabilized at more than 10,000 mu. The ginger industry, mainly in the Xiazhuang management area and Liushouying township, has initially formed an industrial pattern in which ginger farmers, ginger production and marketing cooperatives, and ginger processing enterprises rely on and cooperate with each other under the support of government departments at all levels, which not only absorbed part of the surplus labor force, but also promoted the economic development of downstream industries.
At present, there are more than 50 cooperatives involved in the ginger industry, and more than 50 ginger washing factories in the district, which can carry out the cleaning and simple packaging of local fresh gingers. Ginger health products such as ginger slices, ginger shreds, and ginger candies are very popular in the market.
