It is the critical period for apple harvesting and sales, and fruit farmers are busy picking and selling apples in the sunny days. Zhao Changfu and his wife are working in their orchard too. “We don’t worry about the selling, customers come to buy when the apples are mature, you have to be early or they will be sold out!” said Zhao Changfu, adding that they have about 5 mu of land, yielding 25,000 kg this year, and earning 25,000 yuan in total. “The apples are big, ranging from a quarter to one kilogram each, with good looking and taste, attracting many people to my orchard.”
Changyushan Village is located in deep Jieshi Mountain, with hillside land, sufficient sunlight, large temperature difference between day and night, pollution-free air and water, and unique natural conditions, which is very suitable for apple’s growth. In recent years, Changyushan Village has developed apple industry and green planting, introducing Hongfushi seedlings, the apples look fine and taste good, which is popular in the market. At present, there are more than 300 apple growers in the village, with a planting area of about 600 mu, annual output of more than 5 million kg, and output value of more than 20 million yuan. The upgrading of the apple industry not only benefits the fruit farmers, but also greatly promotes the development of the collective economy of the village, leading the fruit farmers to embark on the journey of well-off.
Like Zhao Changfu, fruit farmer Cao Yuequan was also filled with joy of harvest. In his orchard, workers are busy sorting and packing the apples for sale to the supermarket. In the past few years, Cao Yuequan has actively followed the “agriculture+ supermarket” model, focusing on improving the quality of apples, and ensuring the quality and safety of products by improving varieties, upgrading technology, and strengthening management. “Apples produced in my orchard have high sugar content and good taste. Each batch of apples has undergone strict testing. They are green, pollution-free, delicious and healthy.” Now, he has established cooperative relationships with many large and medium-sized supermarkets such as Ugrant and Xinfa, his apples are very popular among supermarkets.
“In the beginning, I had no skills and no guidance, and suffered delays and setbacks in the early stage of orchard management.” said Cao Yuequan, adding that he learned from other people to improve the level of technology and management, and many farmers like him took part in the training classes, gradually becoming experts of apple planting, with the guidance and support of the professors invited by the governments.
“Almost every household in Changyushan Village plants apple trees, and revitalizing the apple industry can lead the whole village to prosperity,” said Bian Chunying, director of the women’s federation. “Technology is the key to harvest. With the improvement of farmers’ technology, the quality of the fruits is increasing, so is the income. In the future, we will continue to develop the green planting with the guidance of science and technology in accordance with the local conditions and natural resources, to better increase farmers’ income.”
