Straw organic immune carrot field in Pulan Village, Niutou’ai Township, Beidaihe District.
The early winter comes with silence, while the straw organic immune carrot field in Pulan Village, Niutou’ai Township, Beidaihe District is bustling.
Zu Yongming, a carrot grower in Pulan Village, was busy pulling up carrots with his fellowmen. “My carrots were sold out in the field. A few days ago, I received anther order of 50-ton carrots from a wholesaler in Hefei City.” said Zu Yongming.
“Thanks to the straw bioreactor technology, this year is a good harvest of carrots. The head of our village introduced the technology last year, and the carrot yield of my 12-mu land increased from 2,500 kg to 5000 kg. It saves planting costs because we don’t use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The carrots look beautiful and taste delicious. The price of the organic carrots is 2.5 yuan per kilogram while that of the traditionally carrots is only 0.25 yuan. It is the new technology which brought about the great benefits!” said Zu Yongming, adding that customers have to make appointment before purchasing carrots in the village.
There are 1,224 households, 3,010 people, and 5,390 mu of farmland in Pulan Village, crop planting is the main source of farmers’ income. Although the economic development is slow, the village boasts excellent sandy soil for high-quality carrots growing. Traditional planting didn’t benefit the villagers due to the lack of advanced technology.
In recent years, the Party Committee of Niutou’ai Township, Beidaihe District has implemented the strategy of rural revitalization, putting forward the concept of "developing agriculture with science, technology and ecology", focusing on science and technology and low-carbon development, to vigorously develop characteristic agriculture. "We must follow the direction and implement the deployment of the township government. In order to break the bottleneck of traditional planting to rural development, the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Beidaihe District helped us introduce the straw reactor, and applied it to organic carrots planting." said Wu Jiangtao, the village Party branch secretary.

The straw reactor technology costs less than the traditional planting techniques. They used to plant carrots in spring and autumn, burying straws, green garbage and seaweeds in December and May, putting in appropriate amount of biological agents, and sowing in February and July after two months of fermentation. The beneficial microorganisms in the reactor will effectively increase the organic fertilizer of the soil, and increase the photosynthesis of plants by releasing a large amount of carbon dioxide, which will promote the growth of fruits and vegetables, and increase the yield by 30% to 50%. This technology can also increase the temperature of the greenhouses by 2°C to 3°C, so that fruits and vegetables will ripen about 10 days ahead of schedule, which can bring more benefits to growers.
"Only use straws and seaweeds? No chemical fertilizers or pesticides? Will this kind of high-tech work? We don’t understand it...” At first, none dared to try it.
“At first, I doubted about it as other people did, but I was convinced by the village officials, and made experimental plot in my 12 mu of field.” Zu Yongming recalled, “It turned out to be my best decision, the yield increased, the price doubled, and I have received more and more orders. There are currently about 20 tons of fresh carrots growing in the field, all of which have been sold out!” Zu Yongming laughed from ear to ear. The cost of chemical fertilizers and pesticides saved in one mu of land in a year amounts to more than 3,000 yuan, and the yield per mu has increased by about 50%. The average income per mu has increased from about 500 yuan to 11,000 yuan. The villagers saw the prospect of technological planting.
The straw organic immune carrot planting base in Pulan Village has stimulated the other villagers. “They just looked on before, and now they flock to learn the new technology from me,” Zu Yongming said.
“I was wrong at first, I didn’t believe it. I even tried to persuade him to sprinkle some pesticides. What is the new technology? What a risk! That is what I thought at that time.” said Song Lihai, who has more than 40 years of planting experience, “It is a surprise to see the good harvest of the carrots, and I will use the new technology next year!”
Now the carrots of Pulan Village have been popular among customers with their good looking and taste. Wu Jiangtao is registering trademarks to create their brand. They will establish an agricultural production and planting cooperatives, stimulating farmers to take part in the characteristic planting, with new technology and the model of village collectives + cooperatives + farmers. They will introduce organic strawberries and other fruits, promoting the characteristic planting of Pulan Village. “Next year we plan to build 20 greenhouses, which can absorb 2,500 kg of straws, 4,000 kg of green garbage and 1,500 kg of marine garbage, recycling the wastes, and increasing agricultural output and farmers’ income. I am sure that the average income per mu will exceed 20,000 yuan. The average annual income of the growers will be doubled, and will bring the economic and social benefits of Pulan Village.” said Wu Jiangtao.
