Bean geese and white swans fly over the Shihe River.
On February 19, the eighth day of the first lunar month, Lao Bai observed 7 white swans in the melted water near Shihe River in Shanhaiguan District. On the same day, Wang Wenguo, a senior bird watching enthusiast of Qinhuangdao Association of Bird Watching (Lovers), photographed a group of wild geese in Lianyu Village, Haigang District, flying northward in a V-shaped formation.
The ice and snow melted, the grass sprouted, and the migratory birds came back. In the past few days, birdwatchers have taken photos of migratory birds including beautiful swans, mergansers, white-fronted geese, and bean geese, which indicates that whooper swans and geese have begun to migrate across the border.
“The migratory birds begin to fly back to the northern grasslands when the weather gets warm. In previous years, it was basically in mid-March, but it has been early by one month due to warmer weather.” said Wang Wenguo.
Qinhuangdao is an important post on the migration route, and more than 500 birds have been discovered in our city. Qinhuangdao Association of Bird Watching (Lovers) will launch campaigns to protect the migratory birds, rescue wild animals, and support the forestry departments to fight against illegal trafficking in wild animals.
“Protecting migratory birds needs the concerted efforts of the whole society, you and I are the backbone of this campaign.” said Wang Wenguo, suggesting that we should not feed the birds if we have no idea of their habits and characteristics. Please call 110 (Forest Public Security Bureau) or 7093120(Qinhuangdao Wildlife Rescue Center of China Wildlife Conservation Association) if you find injured birds or see someone catching or hunting birds. Please call 0335-5911056(Wildlife Protection Office of Forestry Bureau) to report illegal activities such as poaching, trafficking, and killing of wild animals.
