Zhao Yanhua, director of the Cherry and Biotechnology Research Office of Changli Research Institute of Pomology, is pollinating new variety of sweet cherries.
It’s cold after a spring snow in early March, but cherry trees bloom in the greenhouses of the Changli Research Institute of Pomology. Director Zhao Yanhua and her team are pollinating new variety of sweet cherries.
Cherries, with the same pronunciation of Chelizi in Chinese, are originated from European countries.
Cherries have been planted in Qinhuangdao City since 1985, and Shanhaiguan District of Qinhuangdao City was awarded the title of “Hometown of Cherries in China” by the State Forestry Administration in August 2001.
However, after years of planting, the cherry varieties in Qinhuangdao are obsolete with viral diseases. The imported varieties are not accustomed to the local environment, which restricted the healthy development of the cherry industry.
Zhao Yanhua led her team to cultivate excellent varieties, such as Changhua Zicui, Changhua Zixia, and Wanmilu etc., based on local climatic conditions within nearly 20 years.

Zhao Yanhua said, “The Changhua Zicui features big fruit (up to16 grams), and being suitable for greenhouse or open field cultivation; as is the Changhua Zixia, with an average weight of 9.6 grams per fruit. It tastes sweet and sour with high percentage of fruit.”
At present, these new varieties of cherries have entered the experimental demonstration period in Shaanxi Province, Shanxi Province, and Yantai City, and will be promoted to the growers.
The peach tree in the greenhouse of Changli Research Institute of Pomology bears peaches after short dormancy.
Chen Hu and his team were also busy in the peach greenhouse of Changli Research Institute of Pomology.
Chen Hu introduced that the facility peach cultivation in Qinhuangdao is in a period of rapid development, but the primitive management technology has reduced the quality of the fruit and the income of the fruit growers. Chen and his team took advantage of the high-quality characteristics of mid- and late-maturing varieties to shorten the dormancy time and prolong the growth time of peach trees, to ensure the quality and sweetness of the fruit.
Chen Hu, a researcher at Changli Research Institute of Pomology, said, “The normal dormancy of peach trees is 500 hours, and we shortened it to 100 hours with new technology, which makes the fruit sweeter and more tasty.”
In recent years, Changli Research Institute of Pomology has cultivated a number of new varieties of peach, grape, and cherry, which has been promoted in Qinhuangdao and across China after being approved by proper authority of Hebei Province, and increased growers’ income.
