Qi Junling, member of Wufengshan Village Party Branch, walked on the village road where sanitation workers were doing cleaning, and vehicles full of tourists were coming and going from time to time. “These village roads and the archway were built in 2016. The river along the road used to be filled with garbage, now it is cleaned up. The village has changed greatly compared to the past.”
Villager Song Xiuying said, “The roads are now flat and spacious, with street lamps on both sides of the roads. We are not afraid of walking at night any more. We can take buses to the town, and we get the fresh air at the foot of mountains, there is nothing to complain about.”
The farmhouses are amplified by the white pear blossoms.
Wufengshan Village has seized the opportunity of building beautiful villages, and rationally optimized the layout of village residences since 2016, fully integrating regional characteristics, architectural styles and pastoral scenery in planning and design, focusing on the renovation of the walls and gatehouses along the main village roads, involving 120 households’ walls, and 23,454 square meters of houses’ facades.
At the same time, safe drinking water projects were implemented in the 8 natural villages, 9 deep water wells were drilled, supplying water for four areas. The tap water covered 210 households, which provided the people with drinking water. Sewage was treated in different areas, and the coverage rate of treatment facilities reached more than 80%, and the water quality reached the “Rural Domestic Sewage Discharge Standard” in Hebei Province.
Wufengshan Village has a long history. Surrounded by five peaks, the village was formed in the middle Qing Dynasty, and was a “fortress village” of Luandong Anti-Japanese Aggression Base during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. In 1943, part of the warehouses of the Logistics Department of the Luandong Prefectural Committee, the radio and newspaper offices, and the hospital of the military subdistrict were all set up here.
They have made full use of local resources and developed planting industry. Wufengshan Village has been known as the “Village of Flowers and Fruits” since ancient times and is suitable for planting various fruits. There are 430 households in the village with a population of 1,360, including 45 party members. The village area is 422.5 hectares, including 780 mu of arable land. Villagers make their living mainly on planting apples, pears, peaches, and apricots.
Qi Junling said, “We are planning to adjust the planting structure in accordance with the fruit market, guiding villagers to plant cherries, establish professional fruit cooperatives, register the Wufengshan fruit brand, increase the added value of the fruits, and increase farmers’ income. At the same time, we are developing the rural tourism based on the beautiful mountainous scenery, and the red tourism culture of Wufeng Mountain, making all out to build a new village format that integrates sightseeing, tourism, picking, and health care.”
In 1998, Paleolithic culture layers were discovered on the northern slope of the small reservoir in Wufengshan Village, and 4 flint flakes were collected. In the autumn of 2009, the Hebei Provincial Cultural Relics Census Team excavated two more stone products, and found 6 stone tools. The raw materials were hard-textured flint and agate, which was estimated about 15,000 years ago. All these mentioned above added new cultural connotations and resource advantages to Wufengshan Village.
