Xingangwan Co., Ltd. built a green and ecological port and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 1,600 tons per year by using electricity instead of oil.
Gantry cranes in the container terminal yard of Qinhuangdao Port have adopted electricity as fuel instead of diesel engines. There is no peculiar smell and noise when loading and unloading goods. Emissions are basically zero, and it is clean, environmental friendly, safe and convenient. This is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,600 tons a year.
In December last year, Qinhuangdao Port Xingangwan Company completed the “oil-to-electricity” technical transformation of all gantry cranes, changing the diesel generator drive mode to municipal electricity, and erecting rigid trolley line power supply lines in the container yards to provide power for port loading and unloading equipment, which avoided energy loss from oil-to-electricity conversion in gantry crane operations, improved energy use efficiency, and reduced a large amount of energy consumption.

The reporter noticed two yellow-green devices in Qinhuangdao Port, These were the trolley lines used in the “oil-to-electricity” project. Wei Zheng, deputy manager of the technical design department of Xingangwan Company, said that all the gantry cranes used to be driven by diesel engines for power generation, and exhaust gases such as sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide would be emitted during the operation. The diesel engines would have idling process at the beginning, and cannot be turned off right away, which will cause waste. These problems have been tackled with the “oil-to-electricity” technology. It can be started when used and turned off at any time, which also saved the maintenance costs of diesel engines.
According to energy consumption statistics in the first quarter of this year, the “oil-to-electricity” project has had a significant effect in reducing energy consumption. In the case of a slight increase in the number of containers, the cost of oil and electricity consumption for the gantry cranes was reduced by 440,000 yuan compared with the same period last year, and it is expected to save 1.8 million yuan for the whole year. The renovated gantry cranes have greatly reduced exhaust emissions and noise, which improved the port environment, and will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,600 tons per year.
Over the past few years, Hebei Port Group has comprehensively promoted the construction of green and ecological port, investing a large amount of funds to improve the energy saving, emission reduction and environmental protection with new energy and technologies. Qinhuangdao Port Xingangwan Company focuses on clean energy utilization, optimization of production methods, and intelligent upgrading and transformation, to achieve low carbon, emission reduction, and green transformation.
The Xingangwan Company optimized 12 items such as the equipment operation area in the terminal operation link, the customer reserved collection and distribution plan and operation, and the mobile machinery maintenance, etc., which brought the container terminal operations closer, fully used human and machine resources, reduced the waiting time, and eliminated reactive power consumption. According to statistics, in addition to the gantry cranes, other machinery has reduced fuel and electricity consumption by a total of 160,000 yuan year-on-year in the first quarter of 2021.
