In the middle of summer, the green vines and ruby grapes are thriving in the greenhouse of the Agricultural Base of Hanfeng Gengduyuan Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Hanfeng Gengduyuan) in Fentuo Village, Funing District. 57-year-old Xu Zijing and his colleagues were bagging grapes, thinning the fruit, and talking with each other, and finished their work soon.
“I used to do some odd jobs out of the town, earning little money though. Now I rent my land to the base, getting a rental income of more than 4,000 yuan a year, and I can find jobs here, earning 2,000 yuan a month. It’s good for me!” said Xu Zijing, who has worked at the base for more than 3 years.
Funing District introduced investments in 2017, to promote the development of regional agricultural modernization, striving for the rural revitalization based on local resources.
Hanfeng Gengduyuan is a comprehensive agricultural industrial base of more than 800 mu, integrating ecological agriculture and health industries.
“At present, we have natural farming area, ecological livestock breeding area, sightseeing and entertainment area, and science education area. The farming area covers an area of nearly 700 mu, including 13 smart greenhouses of 153 mu, 15 warm sheds of 50 mu, nearly 90 mu of cold sheds, and 400 mu of bare land planting area. There are more than 40 kinds of vegetables and fruits. More than 100 new positions are offered to the local people, and the per capita income of farmers increased by more than 10,000 yuan.” said Liu Tao, general manager of Hanfeng Gengduyuan.
Workers were weighing, bagging and boxing vegetables at the vegetable packing workshop, but these vegetables look “ugly”, with riddled leaves, misshapen cucumbers and beans....
“These vegetables are natural green foods and are favored by customers.” said Liu Tao, adding that they adopted the “pig-methane-vegetable” ecological agriculture model, which fermented livestock and poultry manure into biogas slurry to fertilize the vegetables. The sorted inferior vegetables can be used as feed for livestock and poultry, making the entire planting and breeding process green and efficient.
Hanfeng Gengduyuan uses the enzyme bacteria method to ferment the inferior fruits and vegetables to produce environmentally friendly enzymes, instead of using pesticides, fertilizers and other chemical agents and feeds in the process of planting and breeding, which decomposes pesticides and heavy metal residues and increases the microorganisms and organic matter in the soil, so that the crop can increases the growth cycle and enhances disease resistance while absorbing nutrients.
“In 2018, we introduced mineralized soil for planting, improved soil quality, restored the balance of soil trace elements, reduced irrigation water, further improved crop disease resistance, increased yield, and guaranteed green organic standards for crops from the field to the table.” said Liu Tao, adding that 5 kinds of vegetables have been approved organic certification, and more than 10 kinds of vegetables obtained green certification.
After more than 4 years of development, the planting method of Hanfeng Gengduyuan has been recognized by more and more villagers. Nearly 70% of farmers working in Hanfeng Gengduyuan have adopted enzymes in their own land.
Cheng Ying, a technician in charge of tomato planting, is adjusting the ratio of enzyme fertilizer and preparing to spray. “By spraying various enzyme fertilizers, the growth cycle of tomatoes can be up to 7 months, and the yield per mu is over 5,000 kg. The fruit is uniform in color and size. The market price is about 5 yuan per kilogram. This year, I used it in my own field too. Enzyme fertilizer is low cost, high yield, and healthy, and the products sell well than these use chemical fertilizer.” Cheng Ying said.
It sounds good, but do they sell well?
“We have 27 direct-sale stores in Tianjin, Tangshan, and Qinhuangdao. All the agricultural products produced in the base are distributed through these stores. At the same time, we take membership management, inviting members to the base to experience planting and production, to improve their confidence. At present, we have nearly 80,000 registered members, the market is broad and the space for development is great .” said Liu Tao.
Hanfeng Gengduyuan’s daily sales of vegetables can reach up to 15,000 kg, and annual sales exceed 3 million yuan. He added.
Good quality, high demand, and promising prospects changed villagers’ planting concepts, and gave them new ideas for agricultural development models. Recently, many villagers talked with Liu Tao, hoping to supply Hanfeng Gengduyuan.
“That is just what we wanted, we want to expand the scale of planting, and we have reached a preliminary agreement with more than 50 villagers, to expand the planting area by more than 200 mu, and get common prosperity, with modern agricultural way of ‘company + farmers’.” Liu Tao said.
