In order to improve the oral English and communicative competence of students of primary and middle school in Qinhuangdao City, accelerate the reform of English curriculum, and select younger English reporters for Qinhuangdao International Channel, Qinhuangdao Education Bureau and Qinhuangdao News Agency jointly held “The 1st Oral English Competition of QHD International Channel”. Adhering to the principle of “cultivating interest through activities and promoting learning through interest” and the principle of fairness, justice and full participation, it aims to cultivate students’ interest in English learning , further improve students’ oral English and promote the English teaching level.
At 8:30 on December 30, 2018, the individual final officially began, in which a total of 50 players participated, including 42 from the primary school division and 8 from the junior high school division. Young contestants turned Qinhuangdao's humanities, history, tourism attractions and so on into appealing stories, which moved the judges and affected the audiences.
The competition was very exciting and brilliant. It is surprising that a lot of young children appeared in this competition. Although they are beginners in English learning, they speak English as the natives with standard pronunciation, vivid expressions and proper gestures and manners. They told the stories of Qinhuangdao in a childish voice and showed their love for English language and their hometown. The older students are even better in pronunciation and performances. They were confident and calm, having done a good job to show their English talent to the audiences and the judges.
The judges evaluated the performances according to their speaking gestures, pronunciations and intonations, and impromptu performances. The contestants also interacted with the judges in English and actively participated in the comments of the judges, uttering their own opinions and sharing their achievements.
Parents said that the competition like this is very meaningful, which can not only improve children's oral English, but also provide them with the humanity and history of the hometown and more cultural knowledge. They hope that there will be more activities like this in the future.
“Many parents force their children to learn English just for the good scores in exams, they don’t realize that learning English well can not only grasp the advanced foreign cultural knowledge, but also enable children to communicate with the world, have an international perspective, and introduce China to the world." says Feng Hongmei, a famous teacher of Hebei Province, and the English instructor and researcher of junior high school and primary school from Educational Science Institute of the Municipal Education Bureau.
