Early warning notice of shellfish toxin from Marine and Fisheries Bureau in Beidaihe New District, Qinhuangdao
“Haihong”, also known as mussels, is a common edible shellfish in the north. In recent years, there have been many poisoning incidents in Qinhuangdao caused by eating mussels, which caused by the accumulation of poisonings in the shellfish by feeding poisonous algae.
According to the results of the four early warning tests of shellfish toxins in the sea area of Shanhaiguan, Hebei Province, provided by Hebei Provincial Aquaculture Disease Prevention and Control Monitoring Station, the content of paralytic shellfish toxin increased gradually with time from March 20 to April 8, 2019. The average content of paralytic shellfish toxin extracted on April 8 was as high as 2088 MU/100 g, which is 4.42 times higher than that of 400 MU/100 g.
In the past few years, combined with the occurrence and development of paralytic shellfish toxin in Qinhuangdao, the toxin content of mussel paralytic shellfish will reach the highest level from April to May. Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) can cause symptoms such as muscle paralysis, headache, nausea, salivation, fever, rash and other symptoms, or even respiratory arrest, and only 0.5 mg can cause death.
In order to prevent the occurrence of poisoning incidents, citizens should not collect, purchase, sell, or eat mussels in these days. The viscera of other shellfish should be removed before cooking, and don’t eat too much at one time. Once you have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps, muscle paralysis of the limbs after eating mussels or other shellfish, you must immediately go to the hospital for treatment.
