On the afternoon of July 26, in the Chaiheshi Market of Shanhaiguan Ancient City, the sound of construction overshadowed the cries of sellers. With the end of the “2019 College Competition on the Chaiheshi Market Stall Renovation”, the old market with a history of more than 600 years looks quite artistic.
In the eyes of the local Shanhaiguan people, Chaiheshi Market is quite closed to their life. The goods here are so cheap that surrounding residents like to go shopping. In recent years, with the continuous renovation and upgrading of the ancient city, the hardware facilities of the market have gradually improved. This competition has filled the market with cultural and artistic atmosphere. Flowers and plants are growing in the plastic baskets on both sides of the market entrance, and many stalls are hung with newly designed plaques. The old Suns’ Grain and Oil Store is decorated with Chinese characters in the complex form and old coarse cloth, which has a strong sense of nostalgia, and shows its long history. An unnamed shop selling the seasoning also has a fashionable new name - Shanhai Baiwei(hundred flavors in the mountains and the sea), coupled with poetic advertisement of “sour, sweet, bitter, spicy, and salty products in the world, multi-flavored seasoning mixed with a hundred flavors of life”. The grain stalls present food tips in accordance with the 24 solar terms, which may teach people some common sense in life.
“It looks better after the micro-reconstruction, fabulous, and the customers also said so too.” Wang Jinmei, who has been in the market for more than 20 years, running the seafood business, said happily. The original concrete block on her stall was affixed with blue mosaic tiles to convey the visual symbols of the sea. Wang Yize and Weng Zihan, who are seniors from Beijing University of Architecture, are working on the liquor stall with paint bottles and polishing the works shaped in the Great Wall bricks. “We adopt the Great Wall culture of Shanhaiguan to our design concept, in conjunction with the working hours of the stall owner, and add the bar elements for people to have a rest.” After about ten days of design and construction, the original cement stall has been replaced by the Great Wall shape, and it will be done after the installation of the light box and the plaque.
It is reported that this competition was sponsored by China Great Wall Society, People’s Government of Shanhaiguan District, and China Great Wall Cultural Research Center, and co-organized by Culture an Tourism Research Center of School of Architecture of Tsinghua University, the 17th Studio of School of Architecture of Central Academy of Fine Arts, and Urban Marketing Research Institute of Tongheng Planning and Design Institute of Tsinghua University. Since the launch of the event on June 5, 20 teams (including international students) from 10 universities, including Tsinghua University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Forestry University, Yanshan University and Beijing University of Technology have been selected through registration, project package submission and program submission to compete together. All the competitions will be completed on August 1. After the careful design of the college students, a total of 20 stalls in the market will be completely renewed, combined with fashion and local style, maybe it will become another tourist destination.
